3 Ways Healthy Climate® HEPA System Improves Your Home Air Quality

Canadians spend 90% of their time indoors, this according to the Canadian Lung Association.

Importance of Indoor Air Quality

As we spend most of our time indoors, it’s of utmost importance that our
family breathes clean air inside our home. We breathe, on average, 21,000
times a day. That’s an equivalent of about 14,400 liters of inhaled air
every day for a fairly active adult.

According to Health Canada and the Environment and Climate Change Canada, indoor air pollution affects people with asthma, allergies and other lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It also increases the risk of stroke, hypertension, angina, arrhythmia, heart attack and heart failure. People who are exposed to indoor air pollution are also at risk of asbestosis and Legionnaires’ disease.

Older adults and young children are most at risk for indoor pollution health effects, according to Health Canada and the Environment and Climate Change Canada. Older adults have weaker heart, lungs and immune system compared to other people in other age groups, making them vulnerable to air pollution.

Compared to other people in other age groups, young children breathe in more air. This makes them more vulnerable to air pollution as they breathe in more contaminants. In addition, young children’s immune system and lung systems aren’t fully developed yet. As such, their body can’t naturally fight off diseases that may result from air pollution.

The Healthy Climate® HEPA system provides a 3-step air filtration process, providing your family clean air at home. Here are the 3 Ways Healthy Climate HEPA system improves your home air quality:

1. It removes large air pollutants.

Stage 1 of Healthy Climate’s 3-step filtration process removes large
particulates from the air.

According to Health Canada, particulates are “particles that are small enough to be carried by the air and therefore be breathed in by people”. They can be in liquid or solid form or mixture of both.

Particulates are categorized according to size as particles of different diameters have different health effects. A large particulate matter has 10 microns in diameter, while a small particulate has 2.5 microns in diameter and less. In comparison, the average size of a human hair is 60 microns. Dust from roads is an example of large particulates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breathing in large particles like dust can irritate your nose, eyes and throat.

2. It removes small air pollutants.

Stage 2 of Healthy Climate’s 3-step filtration process removes particulates that are 0.3 micron and larger, effectively removing 99.97% of air pollutants.

Small particles, according to Health Canada, pose the greatest risk to human health as they can travel deep into the lungs. The CDC, meanwhile, said that small particles – 2.5 microns in diameter and less – are more dangerous than large particles because they can travel, not only into the deepest part of the lungs but also into the bloodstream.

According to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, particulates the size of 2.5 microns in Ontario is largely made up of nitrate and sulphate particles, elemental and organic carbon and soil. These fine particulates, the Ministry said, are primarily formed from chemical reactions in the atmosphere and through fuel combustion, including motor vehicles, power generation, industrial facilities, agricultural burning, residential fire places and wood stoves. Other examples of small particulates are pollen, pet dander, dust mites and tobacco smoke.

“The greatest effect on health is from particles 2.5 microns or less in
diameter,” the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change said.
“Exposure to fine particulate matter has been associated with hospital
admissions and several serious health effects, including premature death.
People with asthma, cardiovascular or lung disease, as well as children and
elderly people, are considered to be the most sensitive to the effects of
fine particulate matter.”

According toHealth Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada, air pollutants such as dust mites and mould can trigger allergic reactions to some people. These allergic reactions are grouped into 2 general categories:

A. Immediate Allergic Reaction

Some bodies react immediately or within minutes after being exposed to air
pollution. Immediate allergic reactions may come in the form of hay fever
or allergic asthma.

B. Delayed Allergic Reaction

Allergic reaction may manifest only days after being exposed to air
pollutants. This appears as a peeling rash that looks similar to eczema.

The stage 2 filtration process of Healthy Climate is also called the HEPA
stage. HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air. At this stage, the
HEPA air filter forces air through a fine mesh and traps small particles
such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander and tobacco smoke.

The HEPA filter of Healthy Climate is also a “True HEPA”. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines True HEPA as “filters with a MERV between 17 and 19 are defined by the IEST test method as having a minimum efficiency between 99.97 percent and 99.999 percent in removing 0.3 μm particles”.

True HEPA air filters are used in medical and laboratory facilities. To prevent the spread of tuberculosis, for instance, the CDCrecommends the use of HEPA filters in isolation rooms for patients with possible tuberculosis. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)also requires establishments to use HEPA filters to control occupational diseases caused by breathing air contaminated with harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases or smokes.

3: It removes chemicals and odors.

Stage 3 of Healthy Climate’s 3-step filtration process has a ½-inch
thick carbon filter for removing chemicals and odors from the air. A carbon
filter is made of carbon-rich materials. As contaminated air flows through
the carbon filter, the contaminants are removed from the air as they stick
to these carbon-rich materials or carbon filter.

If one of your family members or you are very sensitive to odors or there
are odors in your home that are difficult to remove, you may want to
consider the Healthy Climate HEPA system.

7 Facts about Navien Tankless Water Heater

7 Facts about Navien Tankless Water Heater

7 Facts about Navien Tankless Water Heater

If you’ve run out of hot water or your water heater simply stops working,
then you understand the importance of choosing the right water heater for
your home.

For your next water heater, here are 7 facts about Navien tankless water
heater for you to consider:

1. It provides hot water only when it’s needed.

Navien tankless water heater is a type of water heating system that
provides hot water only when you need it. The traditional tank-type water
heaters, on the other hand, produce hot water 24/7 – even in instances when
it isn’t needed. Tankless water heater is also called demand-type or
instantaneous water heater.

By heating your water only when it’s needed, your Navien tankless water
heater doesn’t produce the unnecessary standby energy associated with the
storage type water heating system. This by-demand water heater saves you

2. It delivers quick and endless water.

Navien’s “ComfortFlow” technology delivers you fast and continuous flow of
hot water. No more cold showers. No more running out of hot water and no
more waiting time for the water to heat up. A tankless water heater heats
water without the need of a storage tank. When you turn on your hot water
tap, a gas burner is fired up and heats the water. Because of this, a
tankless heater delivers instant and constant supply of hot water.

The company’s ComfortFlow technology eliminates the “cold water sandwich” –
a phenomenon associated with other conventional tankless systems where the
water that comes out of the heater for the first few minutes is warm,
followed by cold water and then followed by warm water.

3. It saves money.

According to Natural Resources Canada, every day, Canadians use an average of 75 liters of hot water each at
home. Hot water is typically used for washing dishes and clothing,
showering and cleaning. Based on the 2013 report of the Natural Resources
Canada, space heating accounted for 63% of the energy used in the average
Canadian household, followed by water heating (19%), appliances (12%),
Lighting (4%) and space cooling (1%).

“Make the switch to an ENERGY STAR certified water heater to cut your
electricity bill and reduce your carbon footprint,” the Natural Resources
Canada recommended.

A. Energy Factor

Navien’s NPE-A series received a 0.97 energy factor from ENERGY STAR – an
international program that provides certification for consumer products
which meet certain standards of energy efficiency.

Energy.gov, which is run by the US Energy Department, defines energy factor as “the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed over a typical day”. According to the department, the higher the energy factor, the more efficient the water heater is.

B. Operating Cost

A high energy factor, however, doesn’t equate to lower annual operating
cost, the department said. In calculating the annual operating cost, the
following elements have to be considered: energy factor and fuel cost. The
estimated annual operating cost of the Navien tankless water heater, based
on the annual estimated residential use per US Energy Department test
criteria, is $191.

This $191 estimated annual operating cost is lower compared to the
estimated annual cost of a 50-gallon tank-type water heater, which is $293.
That’s a saving of more than $100 per year.

C. Product Lifespan

For its heating system, Navien used stainless steel heat exchangers instead
of copper – a metal that’s susceptible to corrosion. Stainless steel, on
the other, is corrosion resistant, extending the lifespan of the Navien
heating system. According to Energy.gov, most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of over 20 years. In contrast, tank-type water heaters last for 10 to 15 years.

Navien offers the strongest warranty in the industry, including the 15-year
warranty on the heat exchanger. Energy efficiency credits and rebates are
also available depending on your location if you purchase a Navien water

If you calculate your yearly savings, added lifespan, credits and rebates,
this product essentially pays for itself. “It’s important to remember the
cost of energy to operate a product over its lifetime is just as important
as its purchase price,” Natural Resources Canada said.

4. It lowers impact on the environment.

Because the Navien tankless heater only fires up when hot water is needed,
this lowers the impact on the environment. Navien’s premixed burner
releases the shortest flame, significantly reducing the water heater’s
carbon footprint. The Navien water heater reduces harmful Nitrogen by about

Compared to tank-type heaters, the Navien tankless heater reduces your
annual carbon footprint by 1,216.8 lbs. – equivalent to a saving of 62
gallons of gasoline in your car or photosynthesis of about 31 mature
cypress trees. Installing the Navien water heater, therefore, effectively
contributes to reducing carbon footprint, a primary cause of global

5. It saves space.

The Navien heating system can be mounted on the wall. This gives extra
space in your basement, laundry room or garage – areas where heating
systems are typically placed. If you live in a tiny home or even if your
home is big enough, if you’ve lived there for few years, you’ll value an
extra space.

One Navien NPE-A series unit occupies 80% less space compared to a
conventional 50-gallon tank-type heater. The company’s largest unit is only
17.3″W x 27.4″H x 13.2″D.

6. It gives you peace of mind.

NaviLink, Navien’s newest industry-first innovation, is an optional
Wi‑Fi remote control system that makes it easy for you to connect
with your Navien heating system from anywhere in the world.

The NaviLink module can be easily attached to all Navien water heaters. New
main PCB and front control panel need to be purchased for Navien units
produced prior to March 23, 2016 in order to be compatible with NaviLink.

Once this module is installed, download the free NaviLink app onto your
tablet or smartphone. This will then give you access to your Navien water
heating system. Through the NaviLink app, you can remotely control the
heater temperature, receive diagnostic notifications and access usage data.

4 Ways Flowie Water Sensor Saves Money

Have you ever received an unusually high water bill? If you have, you’re not alone.

Complaints of Unusually High Water Bills

The Toronto Office of the Ombudsman (PDF) receives ongoing complaints from residents about excessive water bills. A report from the Toronto Office of the Ombudsman showed that every year, the Toronto Water issues 1.5 million water bills and receives about 300 complaints about high water consumption or billing – typically to 20 times their normal usage. The Toronto Water is responsible for distributing quality drinking water to the whole City of Toronto and portions of the York Region.

The average household (defined by Census Canada as composed of three people) uses about 765 liters of water each day based on the City of Toronto documentation. If your family is consuming more than 765 liters of water each day, something may be wrong with your water system at home. For many homeowners, the discovery of defective water system is only known upon receiving an unusually high water bill.

To monitor your water consumption, the local government of Toronto recommends these two processes:

1. Log onto MyWaterToronto

MyWaterToronto is an online tool offered by the City of Toronto that allows customers to view their water use by day, week, month or year from their mobile device or computer.

2. Observe Your Meter Dial

Your water meter dial has a red triangle that spins whenever you consume water. If this red triangle still spins even if you don’t consume water, then something is wrong with your water system.

What if your whole family is out during the day and only comes home during late in the afternoon or evening? What if some water problem occurs during the day? What if your whole family is out on a week-long vacation? Is it really necessary to interrupt your work or holiday just to check online or physically check your meter dial whether your water consumption level is normal or not?

The Flowie water sensor from Alert Labs monitors your water consumption in real time. It takes just under 2 minutes to install this water sensor and this can be installed by anyone. Simply strap the sensor around your existing municipal water meter.

Even if you’re not at home, this water sensor can tell you what’s going on with your household water situation. Here are 4 ways Flowie smart water sensor saves you money:

1. It requires no local internet or Wi-Fi.

The Flowie water sensor saves you money as it doesn’t need local internet or Wi-Fi. It connects directly to the cellular network, sending you real time alerts about any unusual water activities right to your phone via SMS, email and in-app notifications. This water sensor also allows you to track water consumption and your water savings conveniently from your phone, tablet or computer.

2. It monitors water leaks.

Water leaks drain your savings. Even the very small hole can cost you money. The Flowie water sensor detects water leaks and notifies you in real time when this happens. This real-time notification enables you to remedy the situation like engaging the service of a plumber as soon as possible to stop the water leak, avoiding further damage to the pipes and saving you money.

  • A hole like this flowie water sensor tiny hole, according to the local government of Toronto, wastes 170 gallons in 24 hours, costing you $2.59 each day or $310.70 in 120 days.
  • A hole like this water sensor small hole wastes 970 gallons in 24 hours, costing you $14.83 each day or
    $1,779.49 in 120 days.
  • A hole like this water sensor medium hole wastes 3,600 gallons in 24 hours, costing you $54.71 each day or $6,565.14 in 120 days.

Possible sources of leaks include toilets, faucets and sprinkler system.

3. It works with “Floodie” – a flooding sensor.

Floodie is a sensor that detects flooding. It automatically connects to your Flowie water sensor and sends you instant flood alerts to your phone. It’ll also let you know when the flood ends.

This waterproof flood sensor is simply placed in an upright position in places that are most likely to be flooded like in your basement, near sinks, toilets, dishwashers, clothes washers, fridges, water dispensers, water heaters and water softeners.

Flooding can be caused by the sudden and accidental bursting of plumbing pipes and appliances; overland flood which happens when bodies of water like rivers, dams overflow onto dry land; water entering through sudden openings caused by wind or hail and overburden sewers.

Based on the data from Aviva Canada Inc. , nearly 40% of all home insurance claims are the result of water damage. Water damage as a result of flooding isn’t only costly; it’s also unsanitary. For instance, a flood of sewage into your basement is both costly to repair and dangerous to your health.

4. It prevents mould growth.

The Flowie water sensor prevents the costly impact of mould growth. Mould refers to any fungus that grows as a result of water leaks, flooding or high humidity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , mould exposure may result in a variety of health effects or none at all. For people who are sensitive to moulds, they may experience:

  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Throat irritation
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Eye irritation
  • Skin irritation

“People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions,” the CDC said. “Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold.”

Health Canada (PDF) considers indoor mould growth as a “significant” health hazard. The health department said: “Immediate action is important. Mould will begin to grow within 48 hours. If there is visible mould, it needs to be removed.”

Mould removal is a costly process. Any damp or wet surfaces in your home must be dried within 24 to 48 hours in order to avoid mould growth. Time, therefore, is crucial. Flowie water sensor allows you to take immediate action against mould growth. In addition to water leaks notification, it also gives you reports about basement temperature and humidity.

How NEST Outdoor Camera Prevents Break-Ins

How NEST Outdoor Camera Prevents Break-Ins

How NEST Outdoor Camera Prevents Break-Ins

Picture yourself away from home.

An unknown person jumps over your fence.

You receive a phone notification as your NEST Outdoor Camera captures the images of this intruder.

You check your NEST app notification and see a stranger lurking in your back yard.

You speak via your NEST app, telling the stranger to get out and the intruder immediately runs away.

The above-scenario shows how NEST Outdoor Camera can prevent break-ins.

Prevalence of Burglary in Canada

According to Statista, there were 159,338 burglaries in Canada in 2015. This 2015 data is significantly lower than the burglaries committed in Canada in 2000, which stood at 293,357. Still, the 2015 burglaries were notable considering that’s 436 burglaries each day.

The Conference Board of Canada, using the 2010 United Nation’s periodic surveys of crime trends, gave Canada a burglary score of “B” and ranked the country 8th out of 17 peer countries, with 578 burglaries per 100,000 people in 2010.

Economic loss is evident in burglary. The Government of Canada’s estimated total cost (victims’ tangible and intangible costs, criminal justice system costs and criminal career costs) per incident of residential burglary in 2014 was between $5,928 to $6,228.

In addition to economic cost, burglary has a corresponding psychological cost. While each person reacts to a crime differently, some victims of burglary may experience enduring feelings of powerlessness, anger, insecurity and fear, according to the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime (PDF).

Crimes like burglary, according to the Conference Board of Canada, may also reduce the levels of trust within a community and may result in breakdown in social cohesion. The Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime, meanwhile, said that crimes like burglary can victimize communities “leading to their deterioration over time”.

Security Camera as Deterrent to Burglary

One of the ways to find out what deter burglars is to ask them. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (USCC), Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology (PDF) study asked 422 convicted burglars in North Carolina, Ohio and Kentucky what deter them from burglarizing specific targets.

The study found that outdoor cameras and other surveillance equipment were considered by most burglars when selecting a target. Nearly 60% of the burglars asked by USCC researchers reported that cameras and other surveillance equipment deter them from committing the act of burglary.

NEST Outdoor Camera as Break-Ins Deterrent

While there’s no perfect way to protect your home against burglars, the probability of having your home broken into is significantly reduced if you have the NEST Outdoor Camera. This security camera allows you to prevent a break-in before it happens in the following manner:

  1. It records everything.

NEST Cam Outdoor allows you to view your front yard, back yard or side yard, day and night and regardless of weather conditions – whether it’s sunny or raining outside. It continuously records 24/7 everything within its 130° wide-angle view and in full 1080p HD video.

  1. It notifies you when an intruder enters your yard.

It’s impossible to watch your video feed all the time. NEST Cam Outdoor watches these video feeds for you and notifies you whenever there’s an unusual activity outside your home.

This outdoor camera watches for motion and also listens to noises like the sound of window breaking. It can also identify a person from a thing. Whenever the outdoor camera sees moving objects, hears noises or sees a person, it can notify with a photo from the event through the following:

  • NEST app sends a pop up on your smartphone similar to alerts you receive from other apps.
  • Email you using the address you use to sign into your NEST Account.
  1. It allows you to scare off the intruder with your voice.

In NEST Cam Outdoor, you’re not just a passive observer. Once you get a notification of an intruder in your home, you can scare off the unwanted person by telling – or yelling at him or her – to get out of your property.

You can scare off the intruder by speaking through your NEST app and your roaring voice will come right off the NEST Outdoor Camera with its built-in speaker and microphone. With this built-in speaker of NEST, you can also tell the delivery man to leave your package outside your door.

Even if the intruder decides to steal your NEST camera, he or she can’t steal your video footages. The reason for this is that this outdoor camera doesn’t depend on local storage such as SD card or hard drive. No one can tamper with your video footages as these are stored in the cloud.

NEST Aware – an optional paid subscription offered by NEST – allows you to store 10 days or 30 days of video footages in the cloud. You can, for instance, view the stealing incident footage.

What happens if you miss an alert?

In case you miss an alert, you have the option to see the activity outside your home in the past three hours using the NEST app.

With NEST Aware, a paid cloud service subscription, if for instance, someone stole your package that was delivered four days ago; you don’t have to go through hours of video feeds to spot the culprit. Thumbnails or snapshots of the culprit will automatically be shown to you, so you can immediately watch the video feed where the crucial moments happened.

Keep Your Neighborhood Safe

NEST Outdoor Camera doesn’t only keep your home safe. It can also keep your neighborhood safe. A vigilant neighborhood is a big deterrent against crime. You can share your live stream with your neighbors so you can keep each other safe.

Connectivity with Other Smart Technologies

Another tip to deter burglars is to maintain normal lighting and window shades patterns even if you’re out on a vacation to make it appear that your home is inhabited.

NEST Outdoor Camera can be connected with other smart technologies such as window shades and light bulbs to make it appear that you’re at home even if you’re not.
